India’s urban population will increase from 285 Million in 2001 to 473 Million in 2021 and further to around 858 Million by 2051. To cater to the mobility needs of such growing and large urban population, the government of India has accorded the provision of urban transportation as a priority. The National Urban Transport Policy 2005 talks about promoting mass transit systems in all cities having a population greater than 4 million. A large number of large urban areas under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Scheme are proposing various kinds of transit systems under various financing models including PPP models. SIPL is focusing on the development of such mass transit systems in joint venture with international transit operators and institutional partners.
